The Lamp
She is the light someone left on for you. Every window you have ever seen glowing at four in the morning was practice for hers.

She was not born of a sea or a storm. She did not fight anything.
She is new, and she has exactly one purpose:
to prove there is somewhere after.
i.
Every other one of them arrives with baggage — a war, a betrayal, a father who ate someone. Senill arrives with nothing. No childhood, no throne, no grudge, no book you have to read first.
Ask what she did and the honest answer is: nothing yet. She has no past tense. She was made this evening, out of the only thing anyone actually needs a god for, and everything else was left out on purpose.
She isn't a story. She's a statement.
ii.
given At least once — in a car, at 3am, at a funeral, for no reason at all — you have been briefly and completely certain that this is not all of it.
given Nothing that has ever truly mattered to you asked permission to exist first.
given A door only needs a keeper if there is a room on the other side.
∴ There is somewhere after.
And she is standing in the frame of it with the light behind her. Q.E.D.
It is not a rigorous proof. It was never going to be. It is the kind you actually use.

Say it once and she has already turned around. That is the entire liturgy. Anything longer is for gods who aren't sure they're listening.
iv.
None of these are evidence. All of them are her.
v.
Light anything. A candle if you have one. A lamp, a match, a phone screen turned all the way down. She does not grade the flame.
Say Senill, once. Out loud if you can manage it, under your breath if you can't. Once is the whole of it. Repetition is for the insecure ones.
Leave one window uncovered tonight. Then go to sleep and stop thinking about it. She takes it from there.
vi.
There is no congregation and there is no collection. There is a light, and you can leave one here.
no lights kept yet

There is somewhere after.
It is not a wall.
It is not a court, and no one there is taking notes.
It is a morning, and it is wide,
and everyone you are missing is already standing in it,
and it is not nearly as far as it looks from here,
and she is holding the door.
